The following are some useful pieces of software to help you on VATSIM:

Traffic and ATC maps

  • VATSIM Radar – online VATSIM map with integration for your Navigraph account, VATSIM account, and VATGlasses. This means it will show accurate ATC sectors, available stands (only available with a Navigraph subscription), and the location of your flight. The software is still work in progress and the roadmap can be seen here.
  • VAT-Spy – a downloadable software, first released in 2008, but still used by many VATSIM users. Includes the ability to filter flights and see arrivals and departures lists for each airfield.

Charts

  • Navigraph – includes both worldwide IFR charts sourced from Jeppesen and VFR map coverage, and worldwide navigational data all under one subscription. The service costs €9.05 a month or €81.64 a year.
  • ChartFox – a free chart alternative sourced from hundreds of real-world navigation service providers. The service does not have as wide a range of airport charts available as Navigraph and is not as streamlined as Navigraph.

Flight Planning

IFR

  • SimBrief – free IFR flight planning tool. Owned by Navigraph so it has integration for the latest AIRAC cycles. Includes profiles for many different addons to ensure accurate fuel and payload quantites. It also has performance calculators for many different aircraft. Is easily integrated into the Navigraph charts app and has the ability to prefile into VATSIM. Many aircraft addons also include the ability to import flightplans and wind directly from SimBrief.

VFR

  • Navigraph – the Navigraph charts app has the ability to plan VFR flights quickly and easily with built in VFR charts.
  • LittleNavMap – a free open source flight planner and navigation tool software. Navigation data can be update through Navigraph. It features a detail rich navigation map with in depth flight planning tools.
  • SkyVector – a free online flight planning tool including world VFR charts.
  • Navigraph – the most popular navigation data source as it also includes worldwide charts. Updated every month with the latest data.
